Is Becoming a Driving Instructor Right for You?

Teaching someone to drive is one of the most practically useful things one person can do for another. It's a skill that genuinely changes lives โ€” opens up jobs, gives independence, builds confidence in people who'd otherwise never get there.

If you're patient, you enjoy working with people, and you can explain things clearly without getting frustrated, you'd probably be good at this. Ross has been doing it for over 10 years and it still doesn't feel like work in the way most jobs do.

The demand for qualified ADIs across Surrey and Kingston is consistent. Once you're on the register, building a full book of pupils is very achievable โ€” particularly with local knowledge and word of mouth.

โœ…
If you meet the eligibility requirements below, you can apply to the ADI register and start training straight away. The process takes most people between 6 months and 2 years depending on how quickly you progress.

โœ… Eligibility Requirements

  • โœ“Full UK or EU/EEA driving licence
  • โœ“Held your licence for at least 4 years
  • โœ“No more than 6 penalty points
  • โœ“Clean driving record for the past 4 years
  • โœ“Pass a fit and proper person check (enhanced DBS โ€” currently free)
๐Ÿ’ก Some cases with higher penalty points may still be considered โ€” contact Ross to discuss your specific situation before assuming you can't apply.
The Qualification

The 3-Part ADI Qualification

Three stages, each progressively more demanding. You need to pass them in order โ€” and professional training for Parts 2 and 3 is strongly recommended.

1

Part 1 โ€” Theory and Hazard Perception

A computer-based test covering driving theory and hazard perception at a significantly higher standard than the standard learner test.

  • โœ“100 multiple-choice questions
  • โœ“Must score 85% overall with at least 20/25 in each of 4 bands
  • โœ“Hazard perception: 14 clips, minimum 57 out of 75
  • โœ“Unlimited attempts allowed
  • โœ“Pass certificate valid for 2 years
๐Ÿ“Unlimited attemptsCertificate valid 2 years
2

Part 2 โ€” Advanced Driving Ability

A full driving test taken with a senior DVSA examiner โ€” substantially harder than the standard learner practical test.

  • โœ“Eyesight check at 26.5 metres
  • โœ“5 Show Me / Tell Me vehicle safety questions
  • โœ“1-hour drive covering motorway, rural roads, manoeuvres and emergency stop
  • โœ“Maximum 6 minor faults โ€” zero serious or dangerous faults
โš ๏ธOnly 3 attemptsProfessional training is strongly recommended
3

Part 3 โ€” Instructional Ability

Two 30-minute role-play lessons with a DVSA examiner acting as your pupil. This is where most people find the training genuinely challenging โ€” teaching is a skill in itself.

  • โœ“Phase 1: Teaching a beginner or novice subject
  • โœ“Phase 2: Fault identification and remedial training
  • โœ“Both phases must be passed in the same test

Frequently Asked Questions

ADI Training โ€” Your Questions Answered

How long does it take to become a driving instructor?

Most people take between 6 months and 2 years from starting training to getting on the ADI register. It depends on how quickly you progress through the three parts, how often you're able to train, and how long you have to wait for test slots. Part 1 can be done relatively quickly with focused revision. Parts 2 and 3 take longer because you're developing high-level driving and teaching skills, not just learning facts.

Can I teach pupils while I'm still training?

Yes โ€” once you've passed Parts 1 and 2, you can apply for a Trainee Licence (PDI licence) which allows you to teach paying pupils while you complete your Part 3 training. This is how most trainee instructors start building their pupil base before they're fully qualified. The trainee licence allows up to 40 hours of paid instruction.

How much can a driving instructor earn?

It varies quite a bit depending on how many hours you work, your lesson prices and your location. In Surrey and Kingston, lesson prices are typically ยฃ40โ€“ยฃ55 per hour. A full-time instructor working 30+ hours of lessons per week can earn well above average โ€” and crucially, you set your own hours, choose your own pupils and have no commute. For many people the flexibility is worth as much as the income.

Do I need my own car to become an ADI?

You'll need a suitable dual-control vehicle to teach in once you're qualified. Many new instructors either buy their own car or lease one through a franchise. If you go the independent route (as Ross did), you own your own car and keep all your income. If you join a franchise, they often provide a car as part of the package โ€” but you pay a weekly fee for it and they take a share of your earnings.

Is it better to go independent or join a franchise?

Both have their place. Franchises (BSM, AA, RED etc) offer a ready-made brand, some marketing support and sometimes a car โ€” but you pay a weekly franchise fee regardless of how many lessons you deliver, and you're operating under their rules. Going independent means more work building your reputation, but you keep everything you earn, set your own prices and make your own decisions. Ross went independent from the start and wouldn't change it.

What if I have points on my licence?

Up to 6 penalty points is acceptable to apply for the ADI register. If you have more than 6, or if you've had specific offences, it depends on the type and age of the offence. The DVSA makes decisions on a case-by-case basis for borderline situations. Don't assume you can't apply without checking first โ€” contact Ross for an honest chat about your specific situation before writing it off.

How often do ADIs have to renew their licence?

Every 4 years. Renewal requires a Standards Check โ€” an assessment carried out by a DVSA examiner while you teach a real pupil. It's not a test you pass or fail in a binary sense; you're graded and given feedback. It's genuinely useful as a check on your teaching quality and most experienced instructors approach it as a normal part of the job rather than something to worry about.

Where can I find out more about starting ADI training?

The official starting point is the DVSA's ADI pages on gov.uk โ€” everything about the application process, the three tests and the register is there. For a more honest, practical conversation about what the career is actually like day to day, just call or message Ross. He's happy to talk through it with anyone genuinely considering it.
